Sunrise - Backlit

Sunset - Frontlit

At sunrise, there are multiple compositions that you can consider, using the lighthouse as a focal point. There are many vantage points that will give the photographer multiple composition possibilities. Scout the scene in advance so that you can maximize your camera angles.
  • Record the sunrise using a wide range of exposure settings to give you a variety of color saturation possibilities.
  • Consider underexposure of the scene in order to produce a deeply saturated sky and the lighthouse in silhouette.
  • Use your exposure meter and focus on the brightest portion of the sky.
  • Use a low angle with the lighthouse in the foreground. With a wide angle lens, underexpose the scene, silhouette the lighthouse, and accentuate the deep, beautiful colors of the clouds.
  • If you are fortunate, conditions such as mist, haze or fog will result in softened, pastel colors from the diffused light.
  • On a calm morning, look for reflections in the body of water adjacent to the lighthouse. There are numerous possibilities for abstract, impressionistic, color compositions.
  • Visuals taken in front of the Harborview Hotel will give you side lightning of the lighthouse during sunset and will emphasize texture.
  • The viewing area adjacent to the Chappaquiddick Ferry is an excellent location to set up your tripod.
  • Consider using your telephoto lenses from this vantage point.
  • If you are fortunate, the amber glow reflecting off of the lighthouse will create a striking contrast to the delicate cloud formations.

    Directions:

Leave Edgartown's Main Street and continue down North Water Street to the Harborview Resort.
Directly across from the hotel will be the lighthouse.
